Punished by Acid Several people from the third world become a victim of an acid attack. The victim’s life has changed tremendously, which is what the photographer shows with his world-known pictures. On Ebrahim Noroozi’s photoseries you see a mom named Somayeh and her daughter, Rana and what acid has done to their faces. Now they most stay by themselves and take care of themselves. It is hard for me to understand some people will walk up to you to pour acid on you. Somayeh looked like an average citizen before she got attacked.
That time she was iving with her daughter and husband who told her she would not look like herself, if she got divorced. His threat was serious since he threw acid on her and her daughter’s body. Today both girls look inhuman to a normal looking person. Since 18 months ago when the acid attack happened, their life have been in danger, and they are still fghting. The victim’s skin look deeply burned, and if that is the case, they are very predisposed to diseases. It is easy to become sick when they live at a farm in a poor environment.
Everything looks sad in the pictures, so you wonder if they have ny hope left. Somayeh socialized with people before the attack. Somayeh’s has changed tremendously from the picture before the attack till now and so has her daugher’s condition. Rana wears a glass eye, and she covers the other eye she is missing with her hat. Rana is holding hands with her mom, and her face is covered entirely, when she walks across the street. Somayeh only comes out to undergo surgeries, and a woman is holding her hand to leading direction.
Their new identity has taken a part of their esteem needs, being one of the basic needs from MasloWs pyramid. The yramid of Maslow is a good way to find their challenges to surviving. The victims need self-esteem when covering their faces and isolating themselves. It gives the impression Somayeh does not believe in improvements of herself to find a Job or something that makes her forget about the bad experience she went through. That is a good reason to have low confident in achieving something. People in public might put-down her and her daughter so Somayeh tries to hide herself with a scarf.
It is a problem for Rana too, sine she probably experience bad comments from people and ids in her age, if they are not too afraid of her. The victims must get used to it. At least they can help each other in the future and understand each other, when having the same problem. The challenge for Rana is a post-operative pain, making her having a hard time when she tries to sleep. Somayeh then tries to search for help in God by praying everyday. It must be hard to obtain esteem and move on in life, since they will always remember their new condition and appearance, when the pain from the sideburns appears.
The lack of esteem means the mother does not have any self- ctualization. It means for instance, they lack in solving problems, which is seen when the mother gives up and spends every day praying, instead of doing somehting that makes ner torget about the condition. Another part ot the need is sne cannot accept the fact that it is happening. Somayeh prays so much that it indicates she is having a nightmare, praying is her last hope. But what is most important is finding a way to getting more money to surviving. As pointed out, the sideburns can lead to new diseases.
Also the family can barely pay their medical expenses, but thanks by he villages and the mother’s father they could afford treatments. They might have been dead if they did not get any financial help. But since people want to help them, they should ask for more help, showing the world their problems, rather than praying to God. Somayeh is stil responsible to give her 3 years old daughter a brighter future. And Rana can hopefully get something that improves her face, since her body is still in developement. The pictures by Ebrahim Nozooris are touching, and remind me of what has been more common in Thailand to do as a punishment.
In Thailand a female also got attacked, but by another female, because her husband did not tell the female he was married. The face is you, and to taking that part got social, economic physical and not at least psychological consequences. Acid attack is clearly one of the worst punishments, and should therefore not be done on your worst enemy.
